RNtertainment, the NCLEX Examination review game.

Actually I am in the middle of making decision about my future. As I mentioned before about my bachelor degree that I got from Thailand almost 20 years ago was about nursing. In order to practice in USA, I need to be licensed to be the registered nurse first. So I need to take the test which calls " NCLEX RN" or "National Council Licensure Examination"  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Council_Licensure_Examination On top of that, this Florida where the criterias of the foreign applicants are different than the other states. I may talk about that part later on if I have enough accurate informations.

A few days ago I was wondering what should I do and how to start the processes. I always prefer the actually books and stuff than just looking online. So I decided to go to BAM, Book A Million  http://www.booksamillion.com/ to take a look what would be my other choices more than just the book. It was very fun walking around and picking something interesting to find out what were inside. Then I finally found something interesting and it was sealed. 

Damn it!!! It was a game and it seemed to be fun because it was not a book. But it was sealed!!!

Well... it was not a cheap stuff, of course. I went back home and still kept thinking about it. I finally ordered it online and it got delivered just this afternoon. I could not even wait for a second to open the game after tore down the box, haha...

Tada.... I got an educational game for my MAY-BE future. RNtertainment, the NCLEX examination Review Game, the game that perhaps help me decide whether I should go back to the nursing field or find something else for myself.

I decided to create this YouTube clip to show everything inside the box because I could not see anything when I found it at BAM. Hopefully it helps some nursing students or whoever that will take the NCLEX pretty soon. It seems to be a fun game especially if you have some friends close by to make it a game night. It looks like any board game for me but also educates you in the same time. The box contains lots of cards, board, cones, dice, and a booklet of answers&rationales.

The board is pretty study and foldable so you could keep everything together back into the box after you are done playing it with your friends. It gets 4 spots where you need to place your game cards on them following the color of the spot and the cards. It has the start spot and finish spot to show you where the beginning of the game and where you would be call " The Winner".

In my point of view, these piles of cards are quite thick and look a little scary. But if the game work I do not mind about the thickness. As long as the game does the job and helps me pass through another though time in my life. The cards are categorized into 4 groups of nursing knowledges and they are all in different color. One group contains 200 questions each which means you would get 800 questions totally. Does it sound like quite a few nursing questions to practice for you? Definitely for me, I know about that.

Not only the 4 groups of nursing questions you would get but you would also have quite a few of "Test-Taking Traps" cards and " Test-Taking Tips " cards to guide you to what you should do and what you should not do.

I would be a lot happier if the part of choices would be covered. So I could play the game by myself whenever or anytime I could not find anyone. You know what I am talking about? If they covered the answer from the choices you could read the question and choices but still do not know which choice is the answer. So with this version I still need someone to play with me. I think my boyfriend would be the first victim for sure.

The picture above shows the actual question in the game which also shows you the answer is in the green color. It stands out from the other choices. But I think because the game created to be multiplayers kind and it need be the other players read the question and choices for you to answer. Not designed to be just for you to enjoy by yourself.

From the VDO on YouTube you would see that I showed you about another thing you will get along with the cards and stuff. It is a booklet that tells you answers&rationales which only has a brief explanation. But as I said you are the students, you've been in the classes, or you perhaps already graduated from the nursing school. I am sure you would have a better and longer explanation than that. Or you could even ask the reasons from the friend who is the person that answer that question. Just makes the game a little more fun and challenge, isn't it? 

If I have more time after play the game more often. I would come back for another blog to tell you if I obtain any knowledge and how much I enjoy the game. Fencing club, Mahidol university, Thailand in 1994. #1

What did you do after class when you were in the university? There are just all kinds of activities you could choose depends on your interesting, right? In the campus, you could do the real personal stuff like taking a nap which I know it must be tons of the students have chosen that. Or you could walking around for a peaceful sightseeing even you might have seen everywhere for many many time. Or you could do some exercises with friends like bike riding. Or you could do the musical thing or other kinds of hobby in the club.

Yes, in the club where is not the musical club in the night that you could dance like tomorrow would never come. I only meant the club where people gather to do something they love in common.

When I was in the university I chose to do fencing. Ooooooooh... NO NO! You did not hear anything wrong. Not even a bit, my dear. I was a fencer but unfortunately I was not the real good one.

Around the first month or the second month of the first trimeter after the students got into the dorm. It was one evening that all of the clubs with the members came to the campus to enroll the new members for their club. Yeeeeeeeeah... they could get as many as signatures they could imagine just to sign up and saying that those new members would go to the club realistically. But for sure and everybody knows about it that is not everyone of those new enrolled member would do.

Among those popular clubs, it was just one club that really caught my attention. It was a fencing club where I saw these amazing stuff like the fencing swards, that cool masks, and of course, the suits on the enroll table.

" Oooooooh My Holy GOD!!! That is for real? " I must be that rude girl who said that out loud in my mind when I saw them. It was just really the dream and definitely I only saw this stuff only in the movie. For sure, I signed up myself to the fencing club and went to attend the competition at  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chulalongkorn_University the next weekend.

In 1994, it was a big competition for the college kids like us all year round to practice. Sometimes it was at the university, sometimes it was at the pre-cardet school for the military guy  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armed_Forces_Academies_Preparatory_School  where is right now they have moved that stadium to else where. And if I remember it right, that stadium was in the heart of the city right next to Lumphini park http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lumphini_Park   where is right now is one of the biggest public park in Bangkok.

Most of the members in this club were the medical students from Siriraj hospital. Can you imagine how they have free time? But they did and we did practice the fencing many times a week including to Saturday morning together.

The picture above shows the basic pose that all of the fencers know that you have to practice pretty much all the time. Not even mention many many many many tiiiiiiiiiiiiiimes until you perhaps do not know how to walk properly. In my opinion, it needs to be practice so much because it is the basic pose which give you score in the competition.

In order to be a good fencer you need to be a very healthy and strong person. The competition takes all day unless you lost since the first competitor in the morning. It takes a lot of energy to attack your competitor and defense the attack from your competitor as well. Plus, we were not in the a/c stadium though. Therefor imagine the weather in Thailand with that fencing suit, can you?

For practicing, we usually started from running around the stadium where was the basketball field plus a few rooms where the shooting clubs located. I don't know how many square foot of it but it was quite big for me to run before the fencing practicing. Especially when you have to run in the no a/c for about 10 or 20 rounds of the basketball field. Anytime when I thought about that practicing I always wondered if there is anybody would run in the sport bar and short shorts like I am doing these days or not. It was freaking hot in that building.

It was a 2 stories building closed to the medical students' dorm in side Siriraj hospital. It was  I think right now it must transform to be something big and more useful already. It was such a remarkable place for all of the students and staff who love sport though.

The picture I found on GooGle search engine above is a picture of the dorm where the female medical students stayed in the 1900's and it was located right next to the stadium or the sport club where we practiced the fencing. 

Getting back to my practice session, after running on the second floor of the sport club. We will do the basic pose that I showed you by the picture above to stretch out the legs. Then we will practice the same pose with the dummy or with the other members. After all of those practicing, we usually have a small competition among us. Putting the suit on, getting all the mechanical stuff on and then letting the attacking and defensing go on for real.

It was such a good time to have something to do with friends in the weekend beside just hanging out for something silly. Being the member of the fencing club was one of the very good decisions while I was study. Too bad it was not a fencing club around my house right now. Otherwise I would get back to practice and do my best to be a better fencer.

Life as a nursing student at Siriraj hospital, Mahidol University in Thailand #2

Okie, Okiiiiiiiiie... I have sometime the past weekend a little bit so I had a chance to look and also dig myself into the boxes of pictures. I found some pictures of myself at Mahidol, Salaya campus to show you all. Hopefully one day some of them would be requested to be in the museum.

The picture above shows the lecture building in 1994 where all of the students would attend the classes. But I was not sure which number of this building and it was taken by who. I could only recall that we used this " L " or lecture room that you all must understand the term better for the lecture class when we first started our university life back there.

Thailand is a country of smile and we have that much smiles because we are very very happy. On top of that we are packed with holiday, of course, H O L I D A Y ssssssss... All kinds of holiday all year long. Somebody counted them and told me one day long time ago that we actually have holiday every month. Can you imagine that? 

Therefor, if I could contact some of my classmates to get the pictures from the old days where we had that much fun as the teenager with those holidays or the activities back there. I would write some blogs to have you all enjoy them with me.

I also found these 2 pictures of myself and my roommates who we lived and enjoyed our dorm life as a freshiiiiiiie together at Salaya campus 20 years ago. We stayed at room number 1321 where was in front of the bathroom. Nooooooo, noooooooope, noooooo, you did not hear anything wrong. I said my room was in front of the bathroom.

Back then, the dorm had that shape of " H " which you would see the bridge section of " H " behind the first picture of these 2 pictures above which connected dorm number1 and number 2 together. At the beginning and the end of the building of each floor were the locations of the shared bathrooms. One side of the shared bathroom was the restroom and another side was the shower rooms. 

Imagine early in the morning of every weekdays, do you think I would ever wake up late? NO WAY! I would be waken up by some girls who woke up earlier than me and came to take shower. Not even just one at a time because sometimes they " 4 " came together and chitchat. OMG!!! They were my alarm clock back then.

Now, it is the time to see me in the uniform, I intended to show myself in the uniform to explain you about our outfit after class when we were in Mahidol, Salaya campus. As I said earlier that all of Thai students wore uniform since we got into school until we graduated and that is my uniform with Mahidol University. We will have a pure white short sleeve shirt with either black or dark blue skirt. 

Plus, we got the pin on the chest. Mahidol University pin needs to be on the right side of the blouse which is the only one university in Thailand who had that uniqueness. Oh well... another uniqueness after the bow tie and neck tie for the freshiiiiiiie like us to do AGAIN. But nobody shamed to represent that but we were proud of my university so much.

@@@ PLEASE NOTE@@@ The picture was taken 20 years ago so it was not a slutty modified uniform like the kids these days like to wear though.

By the time I was in the freshmen, it was the first year that university students started to wear " slim fit" which recently it became " REALLY tight fit" to show off all the assets they have to the world. 

Back to my topic, as I said once we were done from classes in the afternoon. Mostly, we would have so much chances to go to anywhere because of the distance from the city. We all would just gathered in the campus. The outfit that everybody must had at that day was the fisherman pants as I show you the picture of them last blog and the top of the uniform. 

If you notice closely at the set of the 2 pictures above you would see the prints or cartoon animation in the fisherman pants that we wore as well. Not so sure if these days the new generation of my university still wear something like this after class or not. I would find out from some of my friends who have their kids who will study there one day pretty soon. The first girl who got married and has kid in my class, right now her daughter is 16 years old and will interested into medical field, who knows? 

Only one thing I knew right now is time flies soooooooooo fast. It's been 20 years already, how old am I? Damn it!!! I do not have enough fingers and toes to count them all. Can I borrow yours?

Life as a nursing student at Siriraj hospital, Mahidol University in Thailand #1

When I first came to Florida, USA around 6 years ago and heard you could go to nursing school part time. Imagine how shock I was at that moment when I first heard about it??? I studied 4 years continuously from dawn to dusk and got BSN; Bachelor Science of Nursing which I am sure we all could possibly agree about it if any of my classmates read this blog. Not only the hours per day but also the break during the trimester. Including to summer time which ALL students on this globe waiting for every year. Guess what? I could recall that I had the fun summer time as a teenager when I was in the freshmen ONLY!

Can you help me count and find out which month I missed in the picture above? We usually have 12 months in 1 year and student will have summer break either starts from March or April in Thailand. Or from other months after May in USA which we will count the break up to around 3 months. But from the picture above, I do not see the summer break but I only see the summer trimester. 

No, we did not have the choice to do the classes during the summer at all. When I was young, as I said around 20 years ago in the university, we already had all the classes set up fro us since the day we got accepted from the university. Wondering about the students who could not pass some classes, right? I have no idea at all about where were they after that. I may ask some of my friends who have been professor and teach at the faculty sometime.

By the time I was studying at that campus, it was a very huge and dated place due to the distance from the city. The picture above really shows the actual dorm I stayed over there in the clean and bright look. Believe in any ghosts or superpower stories? Definitely got some at that kind of place among the big old trees and I will find some to tell you later on.

We used a lot of bicycles to go around the campus as it is such a huge place and not so much of the kids those days would have the chance to own the car. Therefor we got the place to park the bikes nearby the lecture buildings, canteen, management department, and of course, our dorm.

How fun it could be that we could ride the bike after school in the evening in the campus which is filled with trees. Most of the students in Thailand even in the university wear uniform so we would only took the skirt or pants out and wear the fisherman pants and flipflop. Before the school starts at the beginning of the year and before we move ourselves into the dorm, we will see the senior students waiting for us at the bus stop to sell this pants.

It took a lot of practice to be able to wear this pants without loosing them to the ground. I am pretty sure we all experienced once at least. The ones that we had usually had some fun prints with the name of university, some cartoons that represented the fun part of being the student here.

Oh well... talking to me without food issue doesn't sound like you are talking to the real " Joanna" at all. So we are gonna go to a little bit of the food in our campus a little bit. We used the word " canteen" for our food court, cafeteria, or food center. However we did not call it in Thai but we called " canteen" since then and that was how I put this vocabulary into my book.

In the morning, pretty early of course, around 7am at the canteen. You would see the young hungry crow who are all still look like they are not really up from bed and ready to school. But one common thing that every has is the hungry look. When I was there I stayed at the dorm number1 at room number 1321. I was pretty much just opposite to the canteen so the first place after got off from the bathroom was canteen.

All kinds of Thai food you could imagine in the student price which we all could afford to enjoy. Whatever you like, anything you could imagine, to order for your breakfast, lunch or dinner. It is really your choice to make to have either the ready-to-eat dish, cook-by-order dish, or noodle, or all of them.

Those are only the food in the day time but what about after the canteen closed down in the evening around 8pm, what would we do? At that time, 1994, we only had this kind of place. The little warm friends gathering spot in the campus which sponsored by Coca-Cola. That kind of little booth or stand sold only snacks, desserts in the bag, soda pops, and some other drinks in the can. We were kids so we got hungry pretty much all day all night, you know?

I graduated from high school with only around not more than 90 pounds with 5 feet and 6 inches. But by the time I finished my first year at this campus I gained around 25 pounds even I rode the bike and played around the campus with my roommates and my classmates. Sigh... nothing could stop my mouth and keep me away from food REALLY!

Life as a nursing student in the campus.

At my nursing school which is under Mahidol University, we studied so hard with a lot of hours both of lecture and hands-on classes. As I mentioned earlier at the freshmen we will be far from the city at Salaya campus where is right now is completely opposite of what I familiar with 20 years ago. We were there to study basic science with all of the students and stayed in the dorm. Imagine we studied full time from 8 am until 4pm in the evening and only had lunch break for an hour? I never expected I could do it again after I knew the other faculties or any other universities had more free time than us.

The picture below shows what the students would do in free time in the campus which we, the nursing students, did not have when I was in the university. We went to the lecture class from 8am until 4pm and for practical class from 7am until 3pm. But " NO" we usually arrived at the floor by 6ish am and stayed until we really finished our assignment which could possibly be around 4pm. at least.

Once we finished the first year we will move to another dorm closer to the hospital. The main reason was just because life was getting harder and in need to wake up earlier to go to school plus getting some practicing classes. Prior to that moment we got one more remarkable activity for all of us who pass through one of the toughest times of our life as the nursing freshies ( I specifically invented this word exclusively for me. Oooops!!!). We had a nursing cap ceremony at the very first day of the second year in the nursing school.

The picture above shows the differences of nursing student and the practicing RN from Ramathibodi hospital which also under Mahidol university. If  you take a serious look at the picture closely you will notice that they are in the different uniform and the cap they are wearing are not exactly the same. The practicing RN wears the cap with the black band on it and the general RNs will have only 1 band. But the head RN of the floor will have 2 bands and the exclusive RN who is not really practicing the nursing procedure but incharges or manages the department, building, or hospital will have 2 bands.

So for the nursing student we will only wear just the plain white cap without any band. As I said, at the very first day we will be in the nursing cap ceremony and get the pure white nursing cap from our honorable professors. We were among our senior nursing students and pretty all of the professors in the faculty plus the dean.

We woke up pretty early to get ready for the ceremony. Iron the uniform, tight up the hair, put some make up on, and blah blah blaaaaaaaaah... Getting a ride to the faculty by a truck that modified to be our private transportation from the dorm.

After got the cap from the dean we got a cap first on our head as a practicing nursing student by the professors. And of course, getting picture afterward. 

If it is happening to me these days we would have the selfie picture, and post those pictures on any social medias, right? How many websites we would like to see these days... Facebook, Twitter,  Instagram, Pinterest, Blogger...

Most of the nursing students in Thailand wear the student uniform differently than Siriraj hospital. Pretty much all of them wear apron on top of the pure white dress and some nursing school wear blue dress. To be honest to all of you, I thought that was so pretty and for sure I wish I could have that pretty uniform instead of this pure white dress that I needed to wear.

But after all of these years I looked back again I would not regret to wear that pure white with the plan cap though. It looks professional and provides us the maturity by wearing the uniform so much. I still do not have time to find my own picture in the uniform for my own blog so far. I will get myself to do it sometime pretty soon even I am not so sure I could find one. I even recall I have taken picture with the uniform at all.

That is a picture of RN in Siriraj hospital now and then. The reason I said I might not really have picture of myself in the uniform because when I first graduated I started my nursing life as a scrub nurse and working in the operation room where we did not wear that white uniform. 

How to get accept from universities in Thailand.

First of all, I'd better say what I am about to talk in a second happened about 20 years ago which was 1994 when I got in to Mahidol University as I mentioned in the previous post. But not much things have changed since then about the way that we need to study nor the way that we practice our nursing skill. What must be the difference is the way to get in to the university which is pretty way beyond my understanding.

When I was young, we had the quota examinations from all of the most popular and famous universities to get some opportunities to know about your strength. Then around summer time you will go to The National University Entrance Examination ( I do not really know how to call this exam in English though.) which will offer you the greatest chance to get your future back if you are the bad students for every years in high school. Because this exam did not care about your GPA nor any other factors. But only the scores you get in any subjects you need to get into the faculty you want.

Thousands of hundreds of millions kids around the country joined this exam with the big hope that they will get in to the faculty they love and would like to practice when they graduated. By the time I took that test, I had a chance to choose 5 faculties and no limitation for any kinds either science or not. So I took around 12 subjects to take in that exam.

The life-changing day came afterward not too long by a few days once all of the subjects were done examined. The night before that announcement was about the killer. Can you imagine that was 20 years ago and we uses a wooden board with the results stapled on it to show the students? 

Nooooooo, I am not saying we only used the board but we also use phone calls and website that you could check the result. But at the board in any big stadium will have the students who already studied there came to greet and welcome you.

We have some fun activities at the board to greet you, to cheer you up no matter you passed nor failed. I lost that opportunity because I was a little far from the main board so I only called to check my result. What you need to have in your mind while you are racing your heartbeat with the call waiting phone was your examination number and the faculty code number.

In Thailand even my country is not a massive country nor population by that time but every single University had their own ways to welcome the new students.

Main reason of that activity is briefly explanation of how to study and balance the life out side parents' home, learning how to live with somebody else, understanding of seniority. Of course, a lot of fun, laughs, tears, and injuries come along because they are teenagers which will see the fun part bigger than the safe part. Every single year we will see the breaking news, the news on the cover of the newspaper about some kids got injured from the activity.

I was with over 200 students when I was in the nursing faculty at Mahidol university. All of those were girls excluding to another 2 more nursing faculties for the first year. Noooooooo, I am not kidding about the number. It was over 200 from Siriraj nursing faculty and about almost 200 more girls from Ramathibodi hospital. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramathibodi_Hospital. It was a huge class and it was pretty fun to be.

I would like to be in the front row sometimes and definitely not every single class I would attend. I would not lie to you about that and some classes I would go so far like the last row where a big crowd attend to hide myself, BHAhahaha... don't you that when you were young sometimes?

Nursing school was my background when I was a teenager in Thailand.

Almost 20 years ago I was in the nursing school and by that time I was only 17 years old. When I was young at my age, we'd prefer to graduated by GED to get more chances to practice the national university examination more than just only one time after graduated from high school. It was a pretty old story that these days even the teenagers in Thailand would not understand. So I did my best to graduate with GED and got an opportunity to challenge myself with that HUGE life changing test. Of course, I did success with the test and put myself into one of oldest nursing school in Thailand, Siriraj nursing school.

Siriraj hospital, Siriraj Hospital is the oldest and largest hospital in Thailand, located in Bangkok on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siriraj_Hospital which you could learn more about it follow the link from wikipedia that you saw a second ago. Siriraj nursing faculty is one of the nursing faculties that belongs to Mahidol university,Siriraj Hospital (now Siriraj Medical School) and reorganized in 1943 as University of Medical Sciences (Thai: มหาวิทยาลัยแพทยศาสตร์).^[1] The university originally focused on Health Sciences but also expanded to other fields in recent decades. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahidol_University. 

I am pretty sure you all must notice that all of the girls in the picture above are in uniform with the dark blue bow tie at the collar of them. No doubt I needed to wear it as well when I was in the university but only for the first year. In fact only a few weeks when you first got into the university. I was allowed to take it off after I finished the traditional activity that was arranged by your senior or your professors. All of us which means every students in any faculties need to have bow tie for the girls and neck tie for the boy no matter where you are if you are in uniform, bow tie or neck tie is the must!

Mahidol University was established simultaneously with Siriraj Hospital in 1888 by His Majesty King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). It is the oldest institution of higher learning in Thailand, granting its first medical degree in 1893. They have since developed into one of the most prestigious universities in Thailand, internationally known and recognized for the high caliber of research and teaching by its faculty, and its outstanding achievements in teaching, research, international academic collaboration and professional services. 

This diversified institution now offers top quality programs in numerous social and cultural disciplines, including the most doctoral programs of any institution in Thailand, yet has maintained its traditional excellence in medicine and the sciences. 

Mahidol University has many many campuses because it is not only a university but it is a medical schools which most of the students need to have a tons of hands-on classes before graduated. So we all will be together only the first year at Salaya campus where everybody has the most remarkable part of the life about it.

Not only the student uniform in general that all of the students need to wear but the nursing and midwifery student like me also have one unique and pretty cute one. In Thailand, RN will wear scrubs only the RNs in the operation rooms but that was a dress not top and pants like USA. But that was when I was young and fresh grad which I have no idea if they have changed to wear something else or not. I had a lot of hands-on classes to practice and I wore the nursing uniform just like the practical RNs but the differences between me or my friends with them was the black band on the nursing cap.

Believe it or not I almost have no picture of myself in the nursing uniform either when I was a student nor when I was graduated. I first started my practical nursing with operation room and emergency room at Trauma unit where I had so much fun and learned a lot about the real nursing world. The building itself by that time was not the most beautiful building in the hospital and not even mention about being attractive for any reasons. But we all worked hard and also with HEART for every patient no matter you have money in your wallet or nothing at all even to identify yourself.

I think I perhaps have gone to far even I only started about the faculty and my university. It is such a big story to talk about with my education with Siriraj hospital, Mahidol university where I am beyond proud to be a student over there for 4 years.
